■ Scientific Breakthroughs and Commercialization Hurdles of 5-Minute Charging Battery Technology
A paper published in _Science_ in May 2024 by a research team from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST showed a revolutionary advancement in the field of solid-state batteries. They achieved less than 5% capacity reduction after 800 cycles with 5-minute charging, maintaining stability even at voltages exceeding 4.8V using sulfide-based solid electrolytes. Theoretically, this translates to a 5-minute charge for an electric vehicle battery capable of traveling 600km.
However, reality is different.
As of 2024, the average charging speed for commercially available electric vehicle batteries is 20-30 minutes (80% charge) for DC fast charging, and even Tesla's latest 4680 battery takes 15 minutes.
According to a 2023 analysis by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), over 90% of solid-state battery technologies successful in laboratory settings see their efficiency drop to below 50% during mass production.
