Hypertube: The Intersection of Future Transportation, Changing Industrial Landscapes, and ESG

The railway landscape of the Korean Peninsula is rapidly changing. The past single-line railway network, centered around the Seoul metropolitan area, is now expanding into a sophisticated network that connects the entire country in a balanced way, and at the forefront of this is the hypertube. The Korean hypertube (HTX), aiming for completion in 2050, is attracting attention not just as a simple transportation infrastructure, but as a key technology that transforms the national spatial structure and industrial landscape.

Looking at the development of the railway network to date, until the 2000s it was limited to connections centered around general railways. With the introduction of high-speed rail in the 2010s, travel times were drastically reduced. However, the imbalance in railway accessibility remained unresolved, and the gap between provincial cities and the Seoul metropolitan area acted as a barrier across the economy and society. However, since 2023, the high-speed rail network has expanded to include regional centers such as Cheongju, Wonju, Pohang, and Jeonju, making the ‘nationwide 2-hour living area’ a reality. Intercity networks are now evolving from a linear shape into a web-like structure.
